First inaugural symposium brings together scientists and artists to address climate change

Governor’s Island, NY: September 26-27, 2019

Climate change creates new risks and exacerbates existing vulnerabilities in communities already facing water challenges. At this event we explored collective action and considered the following questions:

  • How do we cope with the cultural and economic losses from climate change?
  • How do we talk about loss that can’t be quantified?
  • Do we build more structural defenses, or do we adapt our communities to the “new normal”?
  • Who makes these decisions?

The “Art of Science / Science of Art” Symposium brought together artists, scientists, and engineers who: (1) are concerned about water management and climate change, and (2) recognize that we need to fundamentally shift who has a seat at the decision-making table.
